All about shag rugs

Shag rugs can be made out of many materials, including wool, animal furs, leather, cotton, and synthetic materials. They are different from normal rugs and carpets in the sense that they have a longer pile than other rugs. Instead of a short, closely knit stack, shag rugs sport a long shaggy pile, hence the name. They made their famous entry into home décor shops in the mid 1960’s and were quite popular for awhile. Slowly the fascination for shag rugs diminished, but now they are making a comeback in the home fashion market. The great thing about shag rugs is that they are not only for one particular style. They are never too formal or not formal enough.

There is wide variety of rugs. In fact, you could decorate your entire house with them and you could still perfectly match each rug to the particular ambiance you want to create in each room. It is all about matching colors and materials. Shag rugs have a generic congenial aura around them, but they can still be great rugs for formal living rooms. In ancient times, the Greeks used to use the fur of goats to make long pile rugs very similar to today’s rugs. Today, these flokati rugs are quite expensive, but you can achieve the same thing in terms of style with a multiple pelt sheepskin rug.

Wool and cotton are amongst the most popular materials for shag rugs. Pink seems to be the favorite color for these rugs at this point in time. You can find shag rugs in a variety of colors. White wool rugs make for a plush and elegant living room carpet. You can buy one that stretches from wall to wall, or you can get a small center piece accent shag rug. You can use them any way you want, and they will look elegant, classy, and friendly.

Pink Rugs Make a Statement

You may think of pink rugs only as an accessory for a girl’s bedroom, but this color can actually be used in contemporary homes in other ways as well. Choosing a bright shade of the color can make a real statement in a room. Some decorators have even used pink rugs in kitchens, probably the least likely room where you would expect to find of rug of this color!

Pastel pinks have been used in bedrooms for years to provide a relaxing and romantic feel, and they blend in well with dark wooden furniture. Modern designers are not using pink pastels, but prefer bright pink rugs, even neon pinks. If this is too extreme for your bedroom, you might want to consider using one as a decorative rug in an ultra-contemporary kitchen. The plain white, gray, or black cabinets and counter tops will liven up when you place a hot pink rug in front of the sink. You could add some bright pink plates or dinnerware to show through your clear glass cabinet doors for a coordinated look.

Pink rugs are also used in contemporary settings as a contrast with brown, gray, or black furniture. In a dining room, a large shaggy rug would be just the touch under a chrome dining table with a black glass table top. In the same way, a sitting area would have renewed energy with a bright pink rug in front of a sofa or under a desk. Besides looking very stylish, the rug would add warmth to your feet as you relax on the sofa or work at your desk.

Other shades of pink, such as coral would look very good in a bathroom to give it a seaside décor. You could complete the room with coral towels, a coral rug, and sea shell accessories. If you have a shell collection, you might want to arrange these in a small bowl to place on the sink or shelf. If you want the entire bathroom to have the coral look, add a small coral trash can, toothbrush holder, and toilet seat cover to achieve a relaxing ambiance in your room.
